…I don’t mean to sound harsh, but you’ve got to listen up. I don’t care where you are a Democrat or a Republican; you’ve got a much bigger problem either way that you need to start worrying about. You may think abortion is your biggest concern, whether you believe in your heart that it’s murder and want to ban it or if you want to uphold women’s control of their own bodies and keep religious beliefs out of the government.
The REAL threat to the future of America is YOUNG PEOPLE. Why? We are apathetic. In record numbers. And it’s becoming clear that many of us are growing up to not care about politics or even the government anymore. Perhaps it’s because both parties have screwed up the country so bad since the 1980’s (when we all were young or being born) that we no longer have hope in America.
Barack Obama’s one-word campaign message of “Hope” was brilliant. Obama also used the message “Change,” but that’s not what appealed to the biggest threat facing this country today -apathetic youth. Barack knew what that threat was when he made the decision to run for President of the United States of America. He has inspired millions of young Americans, whether the few who were already politically active or the many who haven’t cared about politics until now.
Now think about this. The other choice? McCain? He’s 72. Now again, I’m not trying to be condescending or harsh, but he’s pretty damn old. I’m not worried about his health or his not knowing how to work a computer or his love of telling oddball, awkward jokes like any other old man. I’m worried about his lack of appeal to young Americans, especially those who have recently become politically active.
Now you Republicans may argue that you would not support Barack Obama based on that idea alone, but I encourage you to try to put away your political differences with Democrats for just one minute, and focus on the future of this country. Apathy only breeds apathy. Try to imagine a world when Americans no longer care about the democratic process and defending our Constitution in a court of law. In that future, America will falter. In that future, true patriotism will be dead.
So on November 4 when you go to vote, I want you to take note of how many young people are there to vote too. And I want you to think about which candidate is bringing in the majority of them.
“Apathy isn’t it. We can do something. So flower power didn’t work. So what. We start again.”
-John Lennon
