Must-See Movie Trailers
As you all well know, I’m a little bit of a stickler for movies. And of course I love movie trailers because they give us a sneak peek at what is to come. Sometimes a movie trailer makes a bad movie look good and the trailer ends up being better than the film was. Sometimes a movie trailer makes a good movie look bad and hides us from seeing how amazing the movie actually is. It’s all in the editing my friends. Editing movie trailers is probably one of the most important jobs in the industry since the trailer sells the movie. Some filmmakers have shot a small collection of scenes and made a movie trailer in order to pitch a film they’re wanting to make without ever having made the entire film. It’s true people. But I think you’ve heard enough Movie Trailer Theory 101 today. Howabout some shiny new movie trailers that I can bet most of you haven’t seen?
Brick – This movie was a hit at Sundance last year and finished the festival with a Special Jury Prize for originality of vision, which it shared with the stellar Me and You and Everyone We Know. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (that kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun) and Emilie de Ravin (better known as Claire from Lost). It’s a drama/mystery/thriller with an incredible noir style that reminds me of Chinatown. I have watched the trailer nearly every day for about a week now, that should tell you how excited I am for this movie. It obviously has had trouble finding a distributor but Focus Features picked it up and hopefully The Moxie will be getting it in April or May.
Devil and Daniel Johnston – This documentary looks quite interesting and I’m in love with the music in the trailer so I’m sure watching this guy’s life story should be interesting enough. The guy is nuts, but his sense of imagination and creativity is incredible.
The Omen 666 – A remake of the chilling 1976 original. There’s no way this film will match the first one, but it should be interesting enough to see. I hope they don’t shy away from making the kid pure evil – I mean he’s the Antichrist for Satan’s sake. The trailer isn’t scary at all, who cares if the kid looks at the camera? Sure it’s creepy for half a second but then it loses its impact. The scariest thing about this movie so far is that it’s being released on 6-6-06.
Idlewild – This musical looks like it has great potential. It looks classy and fun and if it has a good enough script it might even garner some award buzz. While I am not a fan of hip-hop music in the least bit, I do like some of Outkast’s stuff and Andre Benjamin wrote all the music and stars in the film. If nothing else it looks like a really entertaining film.
Thank You for Smoking – This comedy/drama with an all-star cast looks hilarious and is sure to piss off plenty of people – always a recipe for success. The Moxie is trying to get this one but it might end up being pretty big which then Campbell 16 might get it. Wherever it’s playing it’s definitely a must-see for me this spring.
The Fountain – My last film on this list (which I linked on my blog a few months ago) is not a trailer but a teaser (a shorter, less-informative movie trailer). Actually I guess The Omen 666 was also a teaser, but anyway, all you need to know about this movie is a single name: Darren Aronofsky. If that doesn’t mean anything to you then obviously you’re not the film buff you think you are. He is the guy behind Requiem for a Dream and Pi. He also directed an upcoming episode of Lost (Episode 17 which should be airing sometime in February). His films are amazing and this attempt at sci-fi drama should be one hell of a mindjob. Oh yeah, and it stars Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.
