See You Next Year!

This is my final post for 2005. It’s been a wild and fun year. There were many tragedies and triumphs this year in my life, in our country, and in the world, and I hope everyone will take a moment this Saturday night to reflect on it all. Ok, enough of that. I am signing off today because soon I will be packing up my computer and probably won’t have internet access until after the new year. When I come back, you can expect a complete re-design of my blog along with a post full of pictures of my new apartment. But until then, please keep in mind that I will be unavailable online until at least Monday probably. This is Caleb, signing off…

Happy New Year!

P.S.
Here is a first look at the apartment. They let us move a few things in early and so I snapped some pre-move photos. There will be more next week.

All I Got for Christmas…

Hope everyone had a splendid Christmas. I got so much stuff for my apartment! I can’t believe I’m moving on Friday. I can’t wait. It’s going to be a long week, that’s for sure! Here is everything I got for Christmas (hope I don’t forget anything)…

-An awesome black and white framed photograph from Erin
-Mixed drinks recipe book from Stephanie (1,400 recipes!)
-A flask with my initials engraved in it from Rebekah and Andy (sort of a gag gift, I’m not an alcoholic!)
-Wal-mart giftcard from my step-siblings
-Money from Grandpa Copeland
-Money from Grandpa/Grandma Baker
-Wal-mart giftcard from Grandma/Jack Ray
-Money from Dad
-Electric skillet from Dad
-A big box of paper plates/napkins/forks/spoons/etc. to get us by before we get proper dishes from Kathy
-A coupon to go grocery shopping with Kathy (woohoo!)
-A sweater from Mom and Jerry
-Kitchen utensils from Mom and Jerry
-The 40-Year-Old Virgin from Mom and Jerry
-A book about filmmaking secrets from Mom and Jerry
-Toaster oven from Mom and Jerry
-Knife set from Mom and Jerry
-Tea kettle from Zach and Kristen
-Chrome canisters (for flour/sugar/etc.) from Zach and Kristen
-Bath towel/washcloth from Jeremy (yes, he can shop at 4 months old!)

I love all my stuff. With all my Walmart giftcards and money I think I might get a TV for the living room but I’m still thinking on it. I think I have enough to get the TV plus pots and pans and some other stuff. I also looked at Sears last week at the cost of a cheap washer and dryer and I’m considering doing that and paying it off over a few months but we’ll see. I am moving on Friday and my phone and internet is probably going to shut down on Thursday so you all should know that I will not be seen online for a few days! If you e-mail me or comment on here don’t expect to hear back until next week. Your best bet is to call my cell phone, which if you’re important enough you should have that number, heh heh. My new stuff for my room came in last week too and it is awesome. Well I have to go get ready to leave for work (The Moxie). Everyone really needs to go see The Squid and the Whale there before it’s gone. It’s SO funny and so good.

Three Great Web 2.0 Sites

I doubt many of you are familiar with “Web 2.0.” It’s basically a term for websites and tools that are trying to replace many basic desktop functions or simply add a completely new interactive level to the Internet. Instead of people simply reading and viewing things on the Net, they become part of it by contributing to sites and showing off their individuality and experiences in the process. I’m a huge fan of Web 2.0 applications, though many of them are simply useless or headed in the wrong direction, but when I do see a good one come along I usually spend lots of time (or perhaps waste lots of time) on it. Sites such as Facebook use a strong element of Web 2.0 by creating a social network of people and giving them handfuls of functions to play around with. Flickr is another good example as it is more than just a photo-storing tool, it’s a network of photographers sharing and commenting on each other’s work. There is a variety of great sites I could talk about, but for now I will just discuss three of them…

MyFilmz – If you click the link you will get a great example of how the site works (my own list of films). Basically it lets users make a list of DVD’s they own. It adds functions such as “tagging” (this term is growing ever more popular with each passing year month) and lets users search each other based on movie interests. It lets you view lists by DVD cover or by movie information. Some of the film searching and adding could be fixed up a bit and the site itself is kind of confusing to use, but with a little patience you can figure it out in no time. While it may seem useless to some, collectors such as myself would love this sort of thing. Grade: B+

TravBuddy – This site is for anyone who enjoys traveling, reading about new places, or even for people simply trying to plan a trip and wanting to know some good sites to see in any particular area. It lets users create a profile and then add “travelogues” of places they have been. You can add photos, journal entries, and also add suggestions for places to eat and things to see. I just recently discovered this one and I have a feeling I’m going to spend much time browsing through it and creating logs of different trips and vacations I have been on. The layout is so incredibly easy to use and anyone could figure it out. Check this one out. Grade: A+

Last.fm – This is an incredible site that is growing in popularity every day. Not only does it offer FREE customized radio stations based on artists and songs that you like, it also logs what songs you listen to in iTunes and Windows Media Player with the installation of a couple of plugins (little program add-ons). While I’ve had some trouble getting my WMP plugin to work and log my music, the iTunes one works fine. By clicking on the link you will find my profile of songs I’ve been listening to. Please keep in mind I haven’t had this thing installed long so it looks like I don’t listen to much music and when I do it’s all the same stuff. Plus it’s not logging my WMP music, which is the majority of it. Give it another month and it’ll be much more complex of a list. What’s great about this site too is that you can create codes for blogs (which I plan on doing) that will show the last few songs you’ve listened to. Pretty nifty, eh? Grade: A

My Top Ten Favorite Films of 2005

It’s been a great year for indie and documentary films, despite 2005 being one of the worst box office years in history. There were many films I would love to include in this list so I gave them some honorable mentions. There were also many films I didn’t get to see that very well likely have a chance at being included on my list so I mentioned them as well. I try to balance out the artsy films with a few mainstream the best I can, but it’s tough for me to do. And #1 on the list was released in America in 2005, despite it being made in 2003. Click below to see the list…
