Late Update

I had an odd inkling to update tonight. It’s just past midnight. I just finished my pre-production booklet for my next short film, which is a group project. It has to consist of a “chase” scene. I came up with the story and my group members helped develop it into a nice little tale. I did the storyboards for it as well, so most of the cinematography is going to be based on my visualizations in my head. This makes me happy, and hopefully it’s something I can use to my advantage when I’m applying for Electronic Arts and most likely showing them this film. I’m going to show the EA Board my “complexity” film which is our next assignment that we have 6 weeks to complete, and I’m going to probably show them this one which is our “continuity” film, and then show them something I did outside of class. We are only allowed to show 2-3 examples! That’s very frustrating because I don’t think you can fully realize someone’s creative potential with a collection of maybe 10 minutes of film. Or perhaps I’m wrong…

I have another idea for a script. But of course I’m too busy to actually try and write it. My last one I gave up hope on because it was becoming way too melodramatic and cliche. But perhaps one day I shall revive it. My newest idea is about…who goes…and…. Isn’t that wonderful!?! [Do you really think I'd share my non-copyrighted creative thoughts on the Internet?]

Friday night I’m going to Clever to hang out with my brother while the females in our family have a baby shower. And to clarify: the reason my mom is throwing a baby shower after my sister-in-law had her baby is because she did not get to beforehand and wanted to get the Copeland/Baker side of the family in on the celebration. Anyways, I’m excited to see Jeremy, though tomorrow night I probably won’t get to hog him as much as I do when less people are around. I bought him some boots and nice sneakers from Old Navy. Course it will probably take six months before they’ll fit him, but when they do he is sure going to be one preppy kid! I love being an uncle.

Giant Squid Captured on Film

Today Japanese scientists caught a 26-foot giant squid on camera for the first time in history. The extremely elusive animal has been a myth for decades until recent years when biological evidence of their existence was collected by scientists. However, no one has ever captured a live giant squid on film. This was a historical moment for biologists across the globe and a unique story for humans as well. To think that an animal as huge as it has lived for millions of years beneath the surface of the ocean is hard to imagine! Makes you wonder what else could be down there…anyone up for watching The Abyss? :-)

Dilemma Solved

I’m sticking with Electronic Arts. I don’t know what went through my head about taking the easy way out! If I get denied then I get denied. What’s an extra semester or two, right? Today I figured out every class I’ll be taking next semester until I graduate. It sucks because the majority of production classes are only taught in the spring. But I think everything will work out – possibly even without losing my scholarships! I have to take 30 hours a year to keep them and it’s hard because I have all of GenEd done except for one more science and I will have all my core classes out of the way. Though having 12 hours of strictly production classes I would say is equivalent to having 20 credit hours.

Speaking of production classes, my next short film in MED 365 is due Oct. 14. It’s a group project. I’ve got to have the storyboards done by Friday and then we’re going to shoot it October 8 and edit it between then and the 14th. TONS of work in the next 2.5 weeks to be done! Luckily I am actually ahead in my MED 290 class and caught up with all but one of my other classes. But I think I’m finally somewhat enjoying my classes for the first time this semester.

Major Dilemma

I am facing a dilemma with my major. I won’t be able to apply for the Electronic Arts degree program until the beginning of March in 2006. I am blocked from taking certain classes for the degree until I get accepted, which means I wouldn’t be able to start my major classes until my senior year. That means I would be in overload during my senior year and have two serious production classes each semester. I would not be able to work and would be dirt poor and going out of my mind. All because the damn Electronic Arts department is so stingy with handing out the title of “Electronic Arts” to students. I also found out that after my initial portfolio review, if they don’t like what they see before I graduate they can kick me out of the program. Either way, it would most likely put me graduating in December 2007 if not May 2008. As of right now if I continue with my major I have 41 hours left to take in 3 semesters. Now I realize that doesn’t sound bad at around 14 hours per semester, but keep in mind the majority of these classes are PRODUCTION classes.

However, if I switch my major to “Mass Media Production” then I won’t have to minor in anything because it’s comprehensive, and I would only have 34 hours to get through in three semesters. That would put me at around 12 hours per semester which is perfect when most of them are production classes. It’s basically the exact same major despite only 2 classes. Sure it doesn’t have the prestigious “Electronic Arts” name, but it’s the same thing! Another GREAT plus about this is I could still apply for Electronic Arts but I would not have to worry about getting in. If I did get in then I could simply minor in Mass Media and then just take two extra classes.

To me, the smartest thing would be to go with Media Production because it would guarantee that I would get out of here in 4 years instead of 4.5 or 5, and it would also keep me from wasting money and time trying to get into a major that may or may not accept me. On a campus of roughly 20,000 students they only let 5 students into the program each semester. And that’s only if they have 5 students that are good enough.

I’m still contemplating this decision. My biggest regret in not majoring in Electronic Arts would be that I would not be an art major anymore. That saddens me a lot. But I can still apply. It never hurts to try. But I think I’ll be a lot less devestated if I was already focusing on my backup major instead of setting myself up for failure.
